Anyone interested in learning about the intrinsic aspects of the universe?
An interactive display to discover, to learn and to imagine what the sun, earth have was unveiled on Monday, Jan. 28 at the museum located at Dean Porter Park.
A group of students from Yturria Elementary assisted Felipe Pena in a ribbon cutting during a brief presentation of the display that will be permanently on board at least for the first year.
Pena is the museums executive director.
He said the exhibit came out thanks to a $90,000 grant from the National Informal Stem Science Education Network.
‘We are going to keep it here for a year and will lend it to other museums after that,” he said. “It’s an interactive exhibit and children can built models of satellites and experience how planets and the universe are.”
During the grand opening, some students were given headphones and a keyboard as they wondered around while putting on astronaut outfits.
Carol Lutsinger, who works in a science program with the Brownsville school district, told the students and a small crowd attending the event about how technology has been changing things today.
“Look up at the night sky,” she said, “and dream big.”
Pena said they would like to invite students from all over South Texas and from the Rio Grande Valley school districts to visit the museum so they can learn about the world around them.
The museum opens from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
