International Women’s Football Association Team Now in La Feria
- Updated: March 8, 2019
by Tony Vindell/LFN
Have you ever thought about joining a women’s football league at the local level?
Well, now is the time because La Feria has such a league and anyone interested in participating in this form of contact football is welcome to be a member of the organization with the La Feria Valkyries, a local team with the Independents Woman‘s Football Association, or IWFA.
Elmer Capuchines, who owns local venue The Hangout, and Jackie Alaniz are behind the league that has been in existence for a number of years but not here.
Forty four girls are in the league but its organizer would like to have more participation from La Feria residents.
The first scrimmages will be held in April while the games will be played from May through July.
“We have played against other Valley teams,” Alaniz said.
“We have girls in our team who come from other cities but we would like to have more players from here.”
She said they are trying to get support from the city to use the sports complex for the games.
Although the International Women’s Football Association has been around for the past five years, this is the first time a local team is being put together.
Anyone interested in joining the league can call Alaniz at 956-274-1511.
