A Houston-based veterinary company held is first annual fishing tournament on South Padre Island.

Twenty one people with Valley Veterinary Care participated in the tournament held Sunday, May 19, using Jim’s Pier as the event base.

VVC has clinics in the Rio Grande Valley and in Houston, Corpus Christi and El Paso.

The morning trips netted about 40 fish species, mostly speckled trout and one redfish and flounder.

Elizabeth Lukjanovs, director of digital marketing with VVC, caught the tourney’s whopper – a 26-inch trout.

“It was exciting,” she said. “It put up a really big fight.”

Lukjanovs said she used a live croaker to get the trout and fished in the Laguna Madre area just north of Laguna Vista.

She took the biggest trout and Dr. Glenn Head of Arroyo City caught the only redfish.

Randy Shinaut, Matthew Koplos and Pete Koplos of El Paso took the grand prize.

The 25 year old woman said she has been fishing since she was a little girl and has caught all kinds of fish.

However, the trout she caught in the tournament has been the biggest one.

The tournament was held a day after the company held its third annual educational retreat.

VVC owns Border Animal Hospital in Weslaco, Boca Chica Animal Hospital in Brownsville, Port Isabel Animal Clinic and the three others in the Lone Star State.
