The Memorial Day Celebration in La Feria was a great success! Memorial Day is a sacred day to honor the fallen heroes who died in service,” stated Alma Martinez-Botello, lead organizer of the community event. “The veterans’ memorial monument depends on donations for the continued construction and we are very blessed to have Sponsors like the Harlingen Golden Corral, South Texas Collaborative for Housing Development, The Lions Club, Innovated Block, La Feria ISD, La Feria Chamber of Commerce, and El Centro Foods for their continued support year after year.

It’s difficult but a great honor to put this event for our local military families. I was able to organize the event with the help of Keith Grayson. The Memorial Monument project started back in 2010 and took a city pause. I was asked to join the committee about 3 years ago and I am very proud of what it has become today and continue to symbolize a place of remembrance and honor for all our military families and veterans. My contribution or volunteerism of the committee is small to what the veterans have sacrificed for our country and given their lives to protect our freedom. My gratitude goes out to the military families as well. They all deserve so much more and hope you like the program in your honor.”

The event program started at 10:00 am presented by Sunny K. Philip, La Feria Chamber of Commerce President, followed by opening prayer lead by Pastor Fred Perez from First United Methodist Church from La Feria. “The Star Spangle Banner” was sung by Christine Philip and while flag ceremony was done by a local veterans’ motorcycle club “The Relentless Knights – LEMC” lead by Arturo Salas. The LFHS Honor Guard presented the flag of our nation and LFHS Band member Alex Camacho alongside Army Veteran Ignacio Garcia had the honor of playing TAPS. Thank you to LFKS directors Carlos Romero and Eddie Benitez.

On behalf of The La Feria Veterans Memorial Monument Committee, we thank all war veterans.
