A long awaited project to provide housing for the residents of Santa Rosa and its surrounding area has now taken off the ground.

The ground where Casitas de Azucar will be built was broken last week to pave the way for a multi-unit complex of the Community Development Corp. of Brownsville.

The 50-unit project is the first large rental community built in Santa Rosa since 2006.

Located at 20209 FM 506, the development is between Antonia Cavazos Boulevard and San Roman Street behind Elma E. Barrera Elementary School.

The complex is another innovative and sustainable, affordable, cottage community by the CDCB, a nonprofit community housing development organization founded in 1974.

“We are excited to break ground on this unique design that exceeds the needs of its residents while not imposing on its natural environment,” CDCB Executive Director Nick Mitchell-Bennett said. “Casitas de Azucar will be more of a community that contributes to the feeling of home. This is what NeighborWorks Week is all about.”

The $8 million-dollar-plus development received a 9 percent tax credit allocation from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs in July 2018.

Casitas de Azucar will have one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units. Rental fees will be based on size and renter’s income. The complex will have a community clubhouse, a playground, walking paths, a trail and a pavilion with barbecue grills and picnic tables. Casitas de Azucar is also conveniently located near Santa Rosa schools.

Outgoing Santa Rosa Mayor Andres Contreras said the new complex is finally taking off.

“Is going to improve the lives of a lot of people,” he said. “I feel it’s good for our community both economically and from the standpoint of having new rental units so people don’t have to leave to other cities.”

A new Santa Rosa mayor was to be elected during Saturday’s runoff between Bobby de la Fuente and Ruben Ochoa Jr.
