A local iron horse club has made a donation to the Alzheimer Association of Cameron County as part of the groups ongoing campaign to help people afflicted by the disease.
Called The Gypsies Motorcycle Club of La Feria, the seven- member organization. Relatives and friends made a $500 donation during an afternoon luncheon held at the Texas Rose, or the club meeting place.
Adan Lopez, the club president, said the donation is one of two they make every year.
“We have been doing this for a number of years,” he said his friends and relatives were preparing to cook a meal they share with AA members and with patrons of the hangout. “We are a family oriented club that like to help others out.”
The nearly 40 year old bikers’ club had a membership of about 40 but its number have been declining due to a combination of factors.
However, that has not stopped them from collecting and giving money to worthy causes.
The club has donated to other organizations such as the Shriners’ Club and to Valley Baptist Medical Center Mammogram Unit.
The group meets the first Saturday of the month at the Texas Rose – a honky tonk place on Business 83 east of La Feria.
