Job Fair Attracts Many Participants

A job fair held in La Feria drew some 35 participants and some of them had hoped to see more attendees looking for jobs.

Nevertheles, the event was described as a success by an organization that organized and hosted the event – the First United Church of La Feria.

“This is our sixth annual job fair,” Andi Atkinson said, “and we had the most employers this year.”

The fair was organized into seven groups, each using the church rooms including the main lobby where the most employers were giving out information and talking to prospective employees.

Among them were the Harlingen Country Club, Manpower, Liberty Income Tax, Texas Visiting Nurse Services, DISH, Rio Grande State Center and Southern Career Institute.

They were all there for one reason: to make contacts so they can fill dozens of openings at their businesses.

Lasalle Corrections in Raymondville has 30 positions available, mostly for correctional officers.

The Hampton Suites and the Country Club in Harlingen has three openings each.

SubHub is looking for substitute teachers at about 14 schools, including Los Fresnos, Santa Rosa, Santa Maria, La Joya, La Villa, Donna and Lyford.

The Texas Army National Guard, U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Customs & Border Protection were also at the fair making contacts and taking the names of interested applicants.

Dalila Quiroga and Amanda Ramirez, both from Santa Rosa, were at the fair in hopes of landing a job at the La Feria and Santa Rosa school district.

“I would like to find a job in management,” Quiroga said. “Preferably here at home.”
