The La Feria Lions took their Perfect 10 record to Corpus Christi on Friday where they were to face the La Vernia Bears in a bi-district championship game.

The Lions went undefeated after winning six district and four non-district games – the first time the high school team reached the top of the football ladder in modern history.

Coach Salinas credited the players’ hard work and his coaching staff.

“We all work hard,” he said earlier. “We finished the season 10-0.”

Before he, his team and his staff left to face The Bears for Friday’s night game in Corpus Christi, they went with their heads up.

“I feel good (about the game),” he said. “We had a week off.”

Salinas said that allowed a couple of players to recover from injuries sustained during previous games.

He said the Lions were to face a team known for its good offense and which defeated the La Feria team in a third round game in 2018.

“I feel very proud of our team,” he had said. “There are only three undefeated teams in the whole state and we are one of them.”

Cathy Lee Hernandez, the district superintendent, and Cynthia Chairez, the high school principal, also said they was extremely proud of the Lions achievement.

On Wednesday, Nov, 6, the school had a tailgate party where all sorts of foods were shared with everybody. Also, a ribbon cutting of the new track and turf at Lions Stadium took place.

Scores of students, school staff, parents and friends attended both events and wished the football team their best playing against La Vernia.
