It’s the now the battle of the big wild cats for La Feria Lions.
After defeating the La Vernia Bears 63-42, the Lions took the Bi-District Championship on Friday night, November 15.
At press time they are set to face the Liberty Hill Panthers at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio for the Area Championship this past Friday, November 22nd.
The Lions will leave with an 11-0 record, making it the first time in recent history the team has accomplished that.
The Lions remained on top after taking the first playoff game and winning six district and four non-district games.
Coach Salinas says he feels good about it, though he admits the Panthers are a great team to play against.
“We all feel real good,” he said, referring to the game against the Bears. “And everybody is excited about playing another week.”
Salinas said the game showed how good the players are and no injuries were reported.
The Bears put up a fight but could not overcome the Lions, he said.
Salinas said that after the Lions got well ahead of the Bears, they started putting freshmen and sophomores on the field so they could gain experience.
“We put a lot of the kids to play,” he said, “and they are all excited.”
Salinas predicted a good game against the Bears.
Cathy Lee Hernandez, superintended with the school district, said everybody feels very proud of how the Lions have done.
“We feel real good about how our students have made it in all levels,” she said. “The community has come out to support us.”
She said a sendoff was held on Thursday Nov. 21 and everybody wished the team their best.
