Finding a place to live in Weslaco and its surrounding areas is about to get more affordable.

A 242-unit complex, called Primrose Village Apartments, is now under construction a little more than 10 miles west of La Feria.

The $30-million project is a partnership of the South Texas Collaborative Housing Development and the Hidalgo County Housing Authority.

STCHD is a La Feria-based company headed by Sunny Philips, who is executive director with the La Feria Chamber of Commerce.

On Monday, Jan. 27, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to unveil the project that should take 17 months to complete.

“This is a miracle,” Philips said of the project. “This will provide affordable housing for many area families.”

Philips went on to say that the complex will have one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units and renting one will be based on income guidelines set by the U.S. government.

He described the units as luxury-type apartments that people will be able to rent at affordable prices.

Weslaco Mayor David Suarez said the apartment complex will increase the city’s tax base and will benefit many families, some of which are still feeling the impact of recent natural disasters, including the 2018 and 2019 flooding that caused widespread damage in Weslaco and other cities in the Mid-Valley

“We are really excited about this project,” Suarez said. “I am just elated that this came here to Weslaco. We would like to thank Sunny Philips for making this happen.”
