Alliana Briones, a 12-year-old golfer and incoming seventh grader at W.B. Green Jr. High in La Feria, recently attended her first golf tournament of the year.

She took home third place in her age group at the STPGA Junior Golf Tournament, which was held on June 15 at Harlingen Country Club.

While this may have been Alliana’s first tournament of the year, it was most definitely not her first time competing at a tournament. In fact, she has been going to tournaments and winning medals since she was 6 years old.

Over the years she has accumulated quite a few trophies and medals, including: Seven first-place finishes, 10 second-place finishes, six third-place finishes, two fourth-place finishes, and one fifth-place finish.

She has also participated in more than 30 tournaments since she began playing at age 6.

Alliana said she likes playing golf and competing at tournaments. “It’s very calming for me,” she said.

She is no stranger to the sport, either, as Alliana’s father, grandfather and uncle are all avid golfers. Her dad and her uncle, David Briones, who is the head golf coach at La Feria High School, have been coaching her since a young age, and the practice has paid off with many medals and trophies to show as a result.

Last July was the first time she participated in the Drive, Chip and Putt challenge held at the Tierra Del Sol Golf Course in Pharr where she placed second overall and, in the process, qualified for regionals in San Antonio.

And although she didn’t qualify for state out of regionals, she said she was happy to experience something new.

Once she gets to high school and nears graduation, Alliana said she hopes to get a golf scholarship to attend college.
