LA FERIA – The La Feria Fire Department and the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a small grassfire in a field on south White Ranch Road and Adams Drive on Sunday, July 19.
Black ash filled the already-picked field as fire crews tried to put out the hotspots during the windy and hot day. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries.
A sheriff’s deputy on site said the fire could’ve been caused by a mixture of the dry field, wind and heat. The temperatures over that weekend were hitting triple digits during the hottest part of the day when the fire broke out.
During periods of drought, people are encouraged not to burn. According to the Culture of Safety blog, other ways to help prevent wildfires include complying with local laws and regulations, checking the weather, using controlled conditions for burning, and trying not to burn anything combustible or unusual.
