The La Feria tennis team returned to action after a strong fall season. The Lions were able to win a team district title against Port Isabel and now have their sights on the spring season.

The team is coming off their first action in the Harlingen South Silver Varsity Tournament.

“It was good to get the kids back out there,” La Feria coach Noe Moraida said. “We were able to compete in the fall. We were limited to just one district match against Port Isabel. We were not allowed to have any practice match, and we wound up making the playoffs and lost in the area round to Hondo.”

On the boys doubles team, Jonathan Leal and Ythan Castillo brought home first place by beating district rival Port Isabel in the finals. Along the way, the duo beat Brownsville Porter, McAllen High, and Harlingen South.

Senior Nicolas Jimenez won first place. Jimenez defeated Brownsville Porter in the opening round. She went on to defeat Harlingen South in the next three rounds to claim first place.

In addition, Julia Conde and Jimena Salazar won third place in doubles. After a bye in the first round, they defeated Harlingen South to clinch a spot in the semifinals. The duo lost in the semifinals to Port Isabel. Conde and Salazar would later win their third-place match against Harlingen High.

“There is a different energy with the kids since coming back for the spring season,” Moraida said, “especially for my seniors, who had their season cut short last year; and this year, they have a chance to play, and they are out there every day working hard and doing the best they can.”
