The Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) program in La Feria has taken off this year. This is the first year that the after-school program has been in La Feria. The program is provided at no cost due to the 2023–2024 Nita M. Lowey 21st CCLC, 21st CCLC grant.
According to Program Director Jack Garcia, they applied for the competitive grant and ended up being awarded a 5-year grant for $1.150 million per year. The federally funded ACE program will provide both enrichment and academic activities throughout the afterschool program. The program serves K-12 students in Title 1 schools and will be available at all La Feria ISD campuses. Mr. Garcia mentioned that students will be focusing on both academic needs and enrichment during the two hours spent after school and that each campus will provide its own course schedule. Some of the activities the program will provide are homework help, tutoring, hands-on learning, as well as enrichment activities such as music, literacy, fitness, projects that build character, motivation, confidence, and leadership skills.
Recently, the students at C.E. Vail Elementary enjoyed their afternoon playing with construction toys, receiving homework tutoring, and using their creative minds to play with different arts and crafts. Also, the students at the La Feria Early College High School learned food safety practices, knife sharpening, and chopping skills with culinary arts teacher Mr. Duran.
