5 CHAPLAIN RESIDENTS GRADUATE AT VALLEY BAPTIST IN HARLINGEN
- Updated: August 30, 2013
HARLINGEN – Five chaplains recently graduated from a year-long Clinical Pastoral Education Residency Program to train hospital chaplains at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
The graduates, Michael Parker, Jaime Rodriguez, Ilyas Jaraysa, Elizabeth Samuel, and Marcia Miles, completed the pastoral education program, which is designed to equip clergy professionals with advanced specialized ministry skills which are needed to become hospital chaplains.
The Dr. Thomas R. and Betty M. McKibbens Clinical Pastoral Education Center is located in Valley Baptist’s Boggus Education Pavilion, across the street from the Emergency Room. Chaplain residents spend many hours in the hospital providing patient visitation and on-call duty, as well as attending classes.
The supervised ministry program is analogous to a medical residency program. The program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
Each Chaplain Resident is assigned three-month rotations in various clinical assignments throughout the hospital to provide pastoral care to patients and staff.
