Troop 12 Volunteers Construct Needed Tables

The La Feria Shriners Club has served as a hub for their bighearted work with crippled and burned children from Texas and Mexico for many years. Their work is supported by generous donations of time and effort by those wanting to share in their international humanitarian mission.
The latest to come to bat, so to speak, were enthusiastic members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 12. They responded to the urgent need for eating facilities for the medical clinics sponsored quarterly by the La Feria Shriners.
A group of volunteer workers headed by Life Scout Christian L. Banos gathered at the Shrine Club last week and assembled 4 picnic tables–2 for children and 2 for adults. It was an Eagle Scout project. Banos was assisted by Eagle Scouts Michael Clancy and Samuel Hinojosa. Also joining the Scouts were Christian’s parents, Diana and Luis Banos along with their grandfather, G.D. Lozano.
Christian Banos, readers may remember, is the two-car, accident victim who made the news on March 20, 2013 when his car and a Tahoe collided head-on near Robstown, Texas. He was rushed to the Emergency room, and later to the Intensive Care Unit at Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi. His condition was “touch-and-go” for several weeks, but they pulled him through. He is still under medical care. Even so, he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get involved in this Eagle Scout project. Banos became a Scout 12 years ago when he was six-years-old.
Shrine Club Secretary J.D. Foster and his wife, Laureta coordinated Scout Troop 12 and the Shriners for the project. Foster also organized the construction of the roof-covered rest area and bathhouse for the patients and their families next to the Shriner’s Club building while he was president, some years ago.
For the record, Troop 12 received cash donations from sponsors: Mike Lozano Construction, The Neighborhood Doctor, Church of Christ La Feria and Lionel Lozano. The members expressed gratitude for their support.
