Lieutenant Ronnie Hernandez began his administrative duties on October, 21, 2014 as Chief of Police of the Santa Rosa Police Department. Hernandez takes the helm after a series of changes and a major reshuffling of city administrative officials. “It’s a challenge,” he said, “and I look forward to working with the officers on the force as we build a bigger and better police department for the citizens of Santa Rosa.”

“My first order of business since becoming the chief has been the mission of restoring the faith and confidence of the citizens in the police force and city administration,” he said.

“I was serving as a Reserve Police Officer on the Primera Police Department when I learned about the need here in Santa Rosa,” he said, adding, “I immediately took advantage of the opportunity, because law enforcement administration has always been my dream, and now it is a reality.”

The Chief continued, “I am very pleased with my new responsibility. What I found was a good police department that has been through some recent bad times. It is a great opportunity for all of us to work to improve what we have.”

Hernandez outlined what he is striving to accomplish for the department: “Right now,” he said, “we are a couple of officers short to really serve the community.” The department has four full-time officers and four reserve officers.

“We immediately need two more full-time police officers on the force. My goal for Santa Rosa P.D. is to have six full-timers in order to maintain and preserve the peace for the citizens of Santa Rosa.”

In order build up the confidence of the citizens in their police department, Hernandez plans to have more community involvement and visibility in local events and activities.

“You’ll see our officers involved with more things like the annual Christmas parade and giving out toys to the kids,” he said. “We plan to visit local schools, churches and service groups to talk about the importance of law enforcement.”

Chief Hernandez stressed that local citizens have immediate contact with officers of San Rosa Police department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. An officer is available at the police station Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. The number to call is (956) 636-1050. All other times and weekends, call the Cameron County Sheriff’s department at (956) 544-0860. They will notify one of our Santa Rosa police officers to respond.

The chief summed up his view of the department’s new direction by saying, “We plan to be proactive, visible and ready to respond to any emergency call in the city.”
