For the sixth year, the city of La Feria continued the tradition of beautifying the downtown area with this year’s Trash Bash, held Saturday, April 11, 2015. 265 volunteers participated this year, collecting a total of 140 thirty gallon trash bags of garbage.

Check-in began at 8:00 am at the Scott Sloan Memorial Park Pavilion. Groups signed in, collected trash bags, water, gloves and their Trash Bash Safety Orange T-shirts. Volunteers cleaned around the city from 8:30 am – 11:30 am and then met back at the Scott Sloan pavilion for pizza.

Republic Services donated two roll-off containers for the weekend allowing the community to discard large trash items. One container was stationed at the parking lot next to the La Feria Aquatic Center on Main St. & Lilac Ave., the second was stationed at the corner of Canal St. & 1st St. across from Dollar General.

El Centro and Republic Services also donated bottled water so that volunteers could stay hydrated throughout the morning.

Volunteers were asked to take pictures of the most unusual item they could find. These photos will be used as entries into the Keep Texas Beautiful Unusual Item Contest. 17 different items were found.

Areas around town that were cleaned included the La Feria Nature Center, Veterans Memorial Park and Sports Complex, Scott Sloan Memorial Park, AJ Wilson Field, Central Ave – including Tiny Town Park & the Bailey H. Dunlap Memorial Library, Main Street from Pancho Maples Drive to Clark Rd., Business 83 from White Ranch Rd. to Rabb Rd., Arroyo Heights, Oleander Ave., Primrose Ave., Magnolia Ave., Jessamine Ave., Verbena Ave., Lilac Ave., Countrywood, Canal St. and 1st Street.

On average less than one bag of garbage per person was collected due to the cleanliness of the city.

Thanks to all that participated in continuing to keep La Feria beautiful.
