Cameron County Becomes No-Refusal County June 1st
- Updated: April 24, 2015
The District Attorney’s Office aims to reduce the number of DWI offenses, accidents and deaths by implementing a no-refusal policy countywide by June 1.
Law enforcement across the county will require that persons arrested for DWI, and who refuse a Breathalyzer test, provide a blood sample for alcohol testing.
“Texas leads the nation in deaths caused by drunk drivers,” District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said.
“In counties that have no refusal, arrests and accidents have decreased. We aim to do the same for Cameron County.”
In March 2014, the Brownsville Police Department implemented a no-refusal policy. Those DWI cases with blood samples allow for the District Attorney’s Office to secure more convictions and keep drunk drivers off the streets.
“Seeing BPD’s success, I found it imperative to work with all County law enforcement to follow in their footsteps,” Saenz said. “And, all PDs are on board.”
The District Attorney’s Office will hold its annual law enforcement seminar in April. At the seminar, training will be provided for implementation of no refusal.
