Ways of Learning

Grace Heritage Ranch

These past couple weeks at GHR have been full of new experiences. We’ve learned how to process chickens and now we have also processed a steer. Since these things were not passed down through our family, we’ve had to learn through different methods. There are many resources available:

Library: Yes, the library is still a valuable resource. There are many books on how to do things. Some people just need to be able to hold and manipulate the paper they’re reading to help commit the information to memory.

Internet: Ah, the ever faithful internet. Google searches, YouTube videos, even Facebook groups and other social media sites have places you can go to learn. However, you do need to be careful of where your information is coming from. It is a reputable source? Has it been tried out by the individual or are they just passing along something they heard? How do you know it really works?

People: Experienced individuals are really one of the best resources you can find. Someone who will walk you through the process, answer your questions, give advice, and provide feedback. Perhaps the people you frequently associate with don’t know how to do something, but you might be surprised at who they might know and could put you in contact with.

There is no one correct way to learn, and based on your individual learning style some ways will work better than others. Sometimes, the best way to learn is to just do a little research and then get in there and do it. Make a list of the skills you would like to acquire, and then begin to tackle them one at a time. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. But to have both eyes gives you a much greater advantage.
