PROGRESO – The La Feria Lionettes volleyball team went home with their first victory of league play after defeating the Progreso Lady Red Ants three sets to none on September 4th.

The Lionettes had faced heavy competition before entering district action including Brownsville Porter, McAllen Memorial, Weslaco East, and Los Fresnos to name a few.

In past matches, Head Coach Rebea Fraga always mentioned playing bigger schools would benefit them once district starts. Now, the time has come to put the matter to the test.

The Lionettes started off the match by taking the first set 25-18. Early in the second set, the Lady Red Ants didn’t back down constantly matching every point the Lionettes threw at them. However, the Lionettes regrouped and polished themselves to win the set 25-14.

Providing the offensive push was senior Natalie Gonzalez, who posted 3 kills and 1 ace, junior Sierra Salinas with 13 kills and an ace, and junior Jeno Ochoa with 4 kills of her own.

The Lionettes quickly gained control of the game and their momentum carried them in the third set winning 25-8 and recording a clean sweep victory over the Lady Red Ants.

The girls’ volleyball team continue their road trip travelling to play the Hidalgo Lady Pirates, who won their first game as well over Rio Hondo. Following Hidalgo will be a long bus ride to Zapata before hosting Raymondville in their district home opener on September 18th.

Other notes: The Lionettes Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams also picked up wins over the Progreso Lady Red Ants.
