Lions Handle Friendly Rival Mercedes 12 – 0
- Updated: September 27, 2013
by Coach Jaime Acuna
Despite the bad weather across the valley, the La Feria Lions and the Mercedes Tigers tried to renew their friendly rivalry game Friday night, Sept. 13 at Tiger Stadium.
Pouring rain and nearby lightning forced coaches and officials to call the game after only one half of play. La Feria lead the game 12 – 0 before the game was finally called at halftime. The lion offense came out on fire scoring their first touchdown on only their third play from scrimmage to put La Feria up 6 – 0.
Quarterback Eric Cuervo connected with wide receiver Angel Carrera on a long touchdown pass to get things going. Shortly after, Cuervo connected with running back Marco Alejandre on a screen pass to put the lions up 12 – 0 going into halftime. The lion defense once again played very solid forcing two turnovers and only allowing 133 total yards for the game. Mercedes threatened a few times but the lions defense game through with their second shutout of the year. They even had a goaline stance in which Mercedes had the ball first and goal on the one yard line and couldn’t produce any points.
The Lions faced the Santa Rosa Warriors in the annual Battle of 506 at Lion Stadium on Friday night, Sept. 20th. La Feria was looking to avenge last year’s loss in Santa Rosa. With it being a rivalry game and a home game, look for the Lions to come out fired up and ready to play in front of the loyal fans that will pack up Lion Stadium of Friday night. The lion players and staff would like to thank everyone for their continued support throughout the year.
