La Feria Leaps Past Donna Chiefs with 35–13 Victory
Story by Jaime Acuna
The La Feria Lions didn’t let the rain spoil their home opener at Lion Stadium as they cruised to a 35–13 win over the Donna North Chiefs.
The Lion offense was on fire early in the game as quarterback, Isaac Galpin scored the first touchdown of the game on a 2 yard run. Kicker, Joel Nava then added the extra point to put the Lions up 7–0 in the first quarter.
Galpin then hit Lion wide receiver Brandon Perez on a long 53-yard strike to put the Lions up two scores. The fury continued as junior running back, Rusbel Gonzalez scored two rushing touchdowns and senior wide receiver Angel Carrera scored another late in the game.
The Lion defense also had a great game on the other side of the ball. They amassed a total of six sacks and forced the Chiefs quarterback to throw two interceptions.
Senior linebacker, Sergio Contreras led the way with 2 sacks and 11 total tackles. Randy Cantu and Ozzie Cisneros each had an interception as the Lion defense held onto a shutout until late in the game when the game was already all but over.
Overall, the Lions played great and have their hopes high on doing well all season long and making a deep run in the playoffs.
They will now travel to Santa Rosa on Friday, September 5th to face the Warriors in the annual Battle of 506.
It’s a rivalry game, and both teams will be ready to go to war in this heated confrontation that will earn the winner bragging rights for the entire year.
We wish the Lions the best of luck this season … Go Lions!
