School Bus Safety
- Updated: November 20, 2015
School Buses start picking up school children as early as 6:30 am Monday through Friday in and around the city limits. The red flashing lights on a school bus are activated when the bus comes to a complete stop for loading or unloading school children.
Vehicle traffic approaching a school bus from either direction shall stop when the flashing red lights are on. It is a criminal offense for refusing to stop or disobeying a school bus when the flashing reds lights are on.
A school crossing guard is a person designated by local authorities to direct traffic in a school crossing zone for the safety of children on their way to school or leaving school. Pedestrians and vehicle traffic are required to obey a school crossing guard. A person in control of a motor vehicle may not willfully fail or refuse to comply with a lawful order of a school crossing guard who is performing crossing guard duties in a school crosswalk zone. The driver of a vehicle shall stop and yield to a pedestrian or school children.
The yellow traffic signal lights in a school zone are activated from 7:00 am to 8:30 am for all traffic to slow down to a minimum speed of 20 MPH for pedestrians. In the afternoon the yellow lights are activated at 3:00 pm to 4:30pm to slow down school traffic as well. This is done to assure safety for both the crossing guards and the pedestrians. When the yellow lights are flashing in a school zone the use of a cell phone is prohibited.
For the safety of our children and pedestrians the La Feria Police Officers will be out enforcing all of the school zone laws.
