Team USA gets through Group Play, Advances to Round of 16
By Ruben Rodriguez
As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup continues on, Team USA continues to thrive on their quest for the first three-peat in FIFA Women’s World Cup history. In the 2023 Tournament, the USA has been thriving in World Cup play, though it has not been smooth sailing.
In the Group E opener, the USA faced off against Vietnam, and thanks to excellent playmaking, the USA knocked off Vietnam 3-0 thanks to a two goal performance by Sophia Smith, who led the USA’s offense.
The USA was then faced up against the Netherlands in their second Group Stage match and in a close knit battle. Lindsey Horan tied it up late in the match to make it a 1-1 draw.
The USA would then face off against Portugal and in a purely defensive Matchup drew 0–0.
In group play, the US summed up five points to advance into the knockout stages. In the round of 16, the US will face off against Sweden.
USA will continue to aim for the three-peat as they will have to go through a well rounded Swedish squad.
