On Wednesday, March 3, 2024, Nexstar Media discovered that one of their TV towers, located south of La Feria and standing at 1,541 feet, had detached two of its wires. This posed a significant danger of the tower collapsing and potentially harming people in the area. In response, Nexstar immediately contacted the La Feria Police and Fire Department to evacuate nearby residents, including those at the Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witness and David Sanchez Elementary.
Nexstar’s VP and general manager, Jeff Miller, ensured that temporary accommodations were arranged for residents who had nowhere else to go. A block of rooms at the Texas Inn was made available for this purpose.
After inspecting the tower, Nexstar decided that the best course of action was to decommission it. The tower had been built in 1989 and was no longer safe to use.
On Friday, March 8, 2024, the Nexstar tower was brought down at 10 am using timed charges. The charges caused the tower to collapse almost triangularly at the base without damaging the transmitter building. Local TV stations were on hand to witness the controlled demolition, and it was deemed a successful and safe operation. On Wednesday, March 3, 2024, a 1,541-foot TV tower south of La Feria, owned by Nexstar Media, was found to have detached two of its wires, resulting in an unsafe situation with the possibility of it collapsing.
