In early March, the Santa Rosa ISD Texas ACE Program organized an exciting and informative event during the Read Across America week to showcase two local authors and bring their literature to life. The event was aimed at fostering a love of reading among the students and opening up their imaginations to different cultures and experiences.
The first author to present was Monica Velasquez, a teacher with the Harlingen School District and a celebrated author. She presented her latest book, “The Wait Until Sunday for Pan Dulce,” which celebrates the rich and vibrant Hispanic heritage that plays a significant role in the communities. During the reading, Monica drew on her personal experiences and family traditions to bring the story to life. She also explained how her book was inspired by the Sunday gathering of her family where pan dulce was a staple. The students were enthralled by the book and its message, and the reading was followed by a pan dulce treat for the students to enjoy.
The second author was Nedia Lee, a retired educator and an accomplished writer. She read her book, “The Adventures of Zoe the Zoo Bench,” which is part of a series of books with a bench theme. Nedia’s book captivated the children, and they were thrilled to learn about the adventures of Zoe, the zoo bench. Nedia also shared with the students her experience as an author and how she developed the characters and the story. The students were inspired by Nedia’s passion for writing and storytelling.
The ACE students later even had the opportunity to craft their own bench inspired by Nedia’s story, which was a great way to get the students involved and to encourage their creativity. Each event was a huge success, and it helped to promote literacy and a love of reading among the students. The students left the event with a newfound appreciation for literature and storytelling, and they were eager to read more books and explore their imaginations.
