Eight Student-Athletes Competing In Collegiate Summer Leagues

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team announced that eight student-athletes including catcher Rudy Gonzalez, infielders Orlando Samaniego and Jacob Sanchez, outfielder Evan Janner, and pitchers Robert Bonilla, Tyler Davis, EJ Miramontes, and Wyatt Wiatrek are competing in collegiate summer leagues.


The Vaqueros have three student-athletes competing in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL), including Janner and Samaniego with the Seguin River Monsters, and Sanchez with the Victoria Generals. The 48-game TCL season started on May 30 and runs through July 28. The All-Star Game is set for July 3 and the playoffs are scheduled for July 29-Aug. 3.


Janner is off to a good start as he ranks first on his team in stolen bases (10) and RBI (six) and second in batting average (.300) in 11 games. Samaniego has brought home two runners with four hits and two walks. Sanchez is batting .294 with six RBI and has a .400 on-base percentage for the first place Generals.
Bonilla is currently competing with the Liberal Bee Jays of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League and has made one appearance during which he recorded a save by striking out five batters in 3.0 innings. The Bee Jays’ season started on May 31 with their 29-game schedule coming to an end on July 21.


Gonzalez is hitting .500 with two RBI, four walks, and two stolen bases through four games with the Sonoma Stompers of the California Collegiate League. The Stompers’ season started on June 6 and their 36-game slate is scheduled to end on July 28.


The trio of Davis, Miramontes, and Wiatrek are pitching for the Saskatton Berries in the Western Canadian Baseball League. The Berries’ season started on May 25 with the regular season scheduled to end on Aug. 5 and the playoffs to run from Aug. 7-17.
Wiatrek has a 3.37 ERA and nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings across two starts. Miramontes has made one start during which he struck out four in 4.0 innings. Davis has one strikeout in 1.0 inning of relief.
