LA FERIA (Friday, October 5, 2018) – A long-time rivalry was renewed Friday night, October 5, when the Rio Hondo Bobcats snuck away with a 14-7 win over the La Feria Lions at a jam-packed Lion Stadium.
The Lions used their three timeouts to get the ball back with 1:11 remaining in the game, but a fumble recovery by Rio Hondo’s Derrick Castellanos ended what could’ve been a game-tying drive.
In the first half, The Bobcats controlled time of possession and the Lions couldn’t even get pass midfield.
With 14 seconds left in the first half, Rio Hondo quarterback Josiah Ortega found tailback Danny Vasquez for a 40-yard diving catch at the two-yard line, which set up a 28-yard field goal putting them up 6-0 at the half.
The Bobcats controlled time of possession in the first half while the Lions couldn’t even get pass midfield, which meant the Lions needed to adjust offensively.
To start the second half, the Lions offense opened with a 6-yard pass followed by an unsportsmanlike penalty on Rio Hondo, giving the pride good field position.
A couple plays later, receiver Noah Conde grabbed a 40-yard pass from quarterback Dorian Hernandez, which led to their first touchdown in thanks to Eric Alegria, putting the Lions up 7-6 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
On 4th and one, the Bobcats ran the ball and tailback Danny Vasquez broke out for a 33-yard touchdown run to put Rio Hondo back on top, 14-7.
Red-zone struggles haunted the Lions as they couldn’t convert on 4th and long, giving the ball back to the Bobcats.
After a big stop on defense, the Lions got the ball with 1:01 remaining in the game, but a strip-sack fumble recovered by the Bobcats was enough to seal the win for Rio Hondo.
La Feria Lions suffer their first loss of the season and head into district play next week against Kingsville King on Friday, October 12, at Lion Stadium.
