Celica Quintana’s first year as a member of the Lionette golf team has been a memorable one. She started her season by winning the Lyford Invitational, followed by a close 2nd place showing in the Falfurias Invitational. At last week’s district 32-3A meet she came in as the 2nd medalist advancing to the Regional tournament.

This past Monday and Tuesday Celica played at OSO golf course in Corpus Christi. She competed against some of the best female golfers in the Region. On the first day of play Celica shot a 93 that left her in 8th place on that day.

The second day of play Celica came out strong and shot a 85 to improve her two day score of 178. When all the scores finally came in on the second day she had placed 8th out of 94 girls that were competing. With four of the girls that were ahead of her advancing to the State tournament with their teams, the next three girls advanced to State as individual medalists leaving Celica one spot short of advancing to the State golf tournament.

“I am very proud of Celica, she left it all out on the course today, she put up a good fight” said Coach Briones.

This year the Golf team advanced a total of 10 athletes to the Regional tournament a team of 5 boys and 5 girls advanced to the tournament.

On the boys side they had a difficult time adjusting to the course and high winds on the first day. By the second day the boys had improved an average of 10 strokes and finished strong to end their Senior year.

The girls team made up of Juniors and sophomore Celica Quintana had a better showing on the first day. For the girls team
Sara Casarez was the only girl with Regional experience. Sara made Regional’s as a Freshmen and ended up placing 58th out of 94 girls this past week.

The whole team will be returning next year for another chance at a district title and a return to Regional’s with a much more experienced team.

Sammie Lopez, Daniela Robles and Sarah Marchan make up the rest of the girls team that will be returning next year.
