Meet the Firefighters – Ruben Gutierrez

Ruben Gutierrez

Title: Captain

Years of Service: 30 Years

What led you to become a firefighter? I was with a friend who just happened to be a volunteer firefighter when he got a call when I was with him. While he was enroute to the call he gave me an option either to stay seated or jump out of the vehicle, so I remained seated. While my friend went to the rescue, I stayed at the station. I was speaking with the retired Fire Chief Rene Lopez Sr. and before you knew it I was a volunteer firefighter. I then joined as a career firefighter, then fire inspector, to fire investigator and then to Assistant Fire Marshal.

What do you like about being a firefighter? I enjoy conducting inspections and educating the business owners or an occupant of a business on how to prevent fires from starting. I also enjoy finding out what caused a fire to start or who started it.

What do you like least about being a firefighter? Having to respond to a house fire and seeing that a family that lost everything they own due to the fire that could have been prevented as well as losing a life in a fire.

What’s the most exciting moment of your years in service? When an individual is all grown up and still recognizes you and tells you, “I remember you Mr. Gutierrez, you went to my elementary. I still recall what you taught us.”

What’s the best part of service in La Feria? Getting to know the people in La Feria; it’s a small town but everyone knows each other, it’s almost like living in Mayberry.
