Santa Rosa Opens New Dollar Store, Makes Big Splash In Park Renovations

It’s been a big couple of weeks for the City of Santa Rosa, due in large part to the opening of a new Dollar Tree & Family Dollar dual store and considerable progress to city park renovations.

For Santa Rosa’s top officials, these steps signal a step in the right direction towards the betterment of the small community.

“The addition of the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar is an addition to other local convenience stores and restaurants,” Mayor Jaime Quiroga said. “They’ll both help our citizens purchase items not normally found at a convenience store and it also keeps tax dollars in our community.”

“Tax dollars will help us pursue other much needed ventures for the small community of Santa Rosa,” Quiroga added. “Both the park improvements and newly opened stores will hopefully draw the attention of other major retail stores & restaurants.”

The new store, located at 21484 FM 506 in Santa Rosa officially opened late March and held its grand opening last weekend, which drew a welcoming reception from the city’s residents.

“It was a really nice event and turnout,” Store manager Cindy Salgado said. “We had a lot of giveaways, our first 50 customers also received a $5 gift card and we also had raffles going on with a lot of products available to try.”

It isn’t the first time the location has had a dollar store on the property as there had previously been a single Family Dollar occupying half of its space before it would ultimately close.

Still, store manager Salgado says morale was high and times are exciting for the small town.

“It’s very exciting, for sure,” she said. “We were here some years back, but we’re back. We now have this beautiful store for the community. You get the best of both worlds with Family Dollar and Dollar Tree all in one. We have a lot of people coming in, but a lot didn’t know that we’re open and they’re very excited to see that we have both stores in one place.”

As for the city park, the renovations have allowed it to rebound in a major way since the 2019 flood damage.

Where there once was a community pool, there is now a brand new splash pad, which opened on March 24 — less than two weeks after opening its light-covered basketball court.

In all, improvements on the approximately five-acre tract of land included a splash pad, lighted covered outdoor basketball court, family pavilion, replacement of existing playground, trail improvements, benches, environmental interpretive/educational signs, native landscaping and butterfly gardens, new concession area, improved lighting, renewed parking space, and the construction of new and refurbished of existing restrooms.

According to Cameron County Parks and Recreation, the total project cost for both engineering and construction will be approximately $2.9 million, which will be funded through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Non-Urban Outdoor Local Park Grant Program in the amount of $750,000, bond proceeds and the American Rescue Plan Act funds.

“The community definitely deserved the improvements that were made at our Santa Rosa Community Park,” Quiroga said. “Thanks to Cameron County Commissioner Gus Ruiz and the support from the commissioner’s court, this was made possible.”

Quiroga said that the reception from the community’s youth has been positive and to expect new playground equipment and bbq pits to be installed very soon.
