Lions with big turnaround in 2024
By Ruben Rodriguez
La Feria News
The La Feria Lions have turned over a new leaf in 2024, and in a huge way. The Lions struggled briefly before coming back in full swing as they steam ahead on the road to district play.
The Lions opened up 2024 against the Ingleside Mustangs. In what can be easily described as a rough night, La Feria struggled on both sides of the ball. The Mustangs capitalized and took week one with a huge 27-0 win over La Feria.
In the offseason, the Lions were realigned into 16-4A Division II. In order to continue competing, the Lions faced off against former district rival Hidalgo. The Lions and Pirates certainly had their fair share of battles over the years, even coming down to a district title in 2021, that La Feria captured.
As expected, both teams came out swinging, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. For a majority of the night, the Lions and Pirates remained scoreless, as defense stole the show. The Lions then were able to score 13 in the fourth, walking away with a 27-14 win.
The momentum carried over into week three as the Lions took on the Raymondville Bearcats. The offense for La Feria remained hot as the Lions would snag a 27-13 win at home.
The Lions were back home in week four, and were back in business once again. The Roll Pride stole the show, blanking the Valley View Tigers 34-0.
The Lions will take on former district rival Zapata, then Brownsville St. Joseph Academy before they open 16-4A DII play against the Grulla Gators on October 17.
La Feria without a doubt has the weapons to compete, and contend for their first district title since 2021.
