La Feria ISD Hires Chief of Police for District

The La Feria ISD school board held a special meeting on June 25, 2024. Under a proposed budget, the district planned to hire a police chief and four police officers. La Feria ISD recently received its activation letter and made it official by hiring Mr. Carlos Romero. He was the school’s security director and has now been named Chief of Police for the La Feria ISD Police Department.
To make this possible, the district had to make cuts to afford the proposed police department, which has a startup cost of $500,000. Operating costs were reduced by 5%, and all campus budgets would decrease by 5%. Several teaching positions were cut through attrition. A total of $160,000 was obtained from the school district general fund and the remainder from state and federal funds. The school has already purchased three police vehicles.

As the school district ended its contract with the City of La Feria Police Department, they needed a police force within the district. There’s no better time to have a school police force than now, with gun violence at an all-time high.

With the establishment of its police force, the La Feria ISD can now ensure a swift and effective response to any security concerns. The school is now currently hiring a police officer. Once the new officers are trained and stationed at each school, they can guarantee a significantly safer environment for our students and staff, free from the worry of delayed responses or safety issues.

By establishing its own police force, the La Feria ISD aligns itself with a growing trend in the Rio Grande Valley. More and more school districts, including ours, are choosing to have their own police force, which ensures the safety of everyone within the school and allows local police to focus on keeping the wider community safe.

La Feria ISD contrata jefe de policía para el distrito

La junta escolar de La Feria ISD celebró una reunión especial el 25 de junio de 2024. Según un presupuesto propuesto, el distrito planeaba contratar un jefe de policía y cuatro agentes de policía. La Feria ISD recibió recientemente su carta de activación y la hizo oficial al contratar al Sr. Carlos Romero. Fue director de seguridad de la escuela y ahora ha sido nombrado Jefe de Policía del Departamento de Policía de La Feria ISD.

Para que esto sea posible, el distrito tuvo que hacer recortes para costear el departamento de policía propuesto, que tiene un costo inicial de $500,000. Los costos operativos se redujeron en un 5% y todos los presupuestos del campus disminuirían en un 5%. Varios puestos docentes fueron eliminados debido al desgaste. Al establecer su propia fuerza policial, La Feria ISD se alinea con una tendencia creciente en el Valle del Río Grande. Cada vez más distritos escolares, incluido el nuestro, eligen tener su propia fuerza policial, lo que garantiza la seguridad de todos dentro de la escuela y permite a la policía local concentrarse en mantener segura a la comunidad en general.
