La Feria Lionettes Capture Lyford Holiday Tournament Championship

Over the Holiday Break, The La Feria Lionettes competed in the 2021 Lyford Holiday Tournament.16 teams were invited to compete in the three-day tournament from December 28th through the 30th.


After a great start on day one, The Lady Falcons kicked off day 2 play against the Harvest Christian Lady Eagles, one of the powerhouses heading into the tournament. From the Start, the Lionettes and Lady Eagles played an intense game as both teams tried to take control early on. In what was a back and forth battle throughout the game, Harvest Christian took control in the late stages of the game to capture the win over the Lionettes 51-45. With this loss, the Lionettes were placed into the Gold Bracket.


Next up on day two, La Feria faced off against the San Isidro Lady Tigers, La Feria took control from the start as the Lionettes outscored the Lady Tigers by ten points to make it 18 to 8 at the end of the First Quarter. The second quarter was more of a defensive battle as only eight points were scored between the two teams. La Feria still was in control of the game to make it 24 to 10 at the half. La Feria’s momentum continued into the second half as they maintained control both offensively and defensively, outscoring the Lady Tigers 23 to 14. La Feria defeated San Isidro 47 to 24.

In the Championship game of the Gold Bracket. La Feria Faced off against the Santa Maria Lady Cougars. From the opening tipoff, dominance was the name of the game for the Lionettes as they managed to control and outplay the Cougars both on offense and defense. La Feria’s high-powered offense was led by Kaya Dickerson and Alani Garza who combined for 28 points to defeat Santa Maria 37 to 23. Lillian Martinez and Mariah Pattan also propelled the offense and defense.


The Lionettes are set to begin District Play Friday, January 7th on the road against Rio Hondo. “As long as we’re playing together and doing what we’re supposed to do on offense and defense, we’re going to be alright” Lionettes’ Head Coach Delia Lopez on her team heading into the District Schedule. The District Home opener will be Tuesday, January 11th vs the Raymondville Lady Bearkats.
