On Thursday, October 13th, the City of La Feria held its groundbreaking ceremony to kick off its renovation project for both Scott Sloan and Veterans Memorial park in La Feria. Both parks will have the basketball courts and trails resurfaced, which was mentioned back in June in an article titled “Upgrades Underway at Local Parks”

In a post put out by the City, they stated, “This project will include expanded parking and repairs to walking trails at Scott Sloane Park and Veteran’s Memorial Sports Complex. Scott Sloane park will also be getting a new scoreboard for the baseball field.”

Expanding on the parking is one of the big things for Scott Sloan park. Not only will they have another opening for parking but will also add parking along the parameter of the park.

In attendance was State Representative of District 35, Oscar Longoria, County Commissioner Gus Ruiz of Precinct 4, and Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

Gus Ruiz shares that he believes we are “working together as a team to improve the quality of life for the people here in La Feria,” As Ruiz mentions in his speech, quote, “Thousands of families and thousands of kids are gonna be utilizing these parks for years to come, even when we are gone.”

After the ceremony, Oscar Longoria shared in a tweet, “Congratulations to City of La Feria for the groundbreaking on their park improvements at Scott Sloane Park! It was great to work in collaboration with the City, Commissioner Gus Ruiz, Pct.4, and Office of Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. to make this a reality.”

Both the City, County, and our State representative all shared that they see the growth happening in La Feria and find that Park renovations are an important part. With four to five residential subdivisions going up there will be something like 550 new homes built in the next year or so.

Mayor Olga Maldonado leads the ceremony at Scott Sloan Park

City Manager, Jaime Sandavol shared that they have plans for more renovations but only as more money & grants become available. The City Manager mentions additions to the local pool there at Scott Sloan park and possibly a splash pad are just some of the ideas the City Manager is thinking on. He also noted that they have ordered an all-inclusive playscape. This playscape will be located at the Veterans Memorial Park. Public Works Director, Alfonso Rodriguez shares that the equipment has been on backorder for several months, but that the company has currently said they can be expecting the equipment around mid-March.

More details on the project’s progress and development to come. Be sure to pick up your local paper at El Centro, Los Leones, or La Feria Cafe.
