Golf Tournament to be Held toHelp Cancer Patients

By Mike Villarreal

The James Richard Closner Foundation is excited to announce the upcoming 10th annual Golf Tournament in support of its mission. Established in 2002, the Foundation was created by James’ family and his three closest friends in memory of James, who passed away from esophageal cancer at the age of 28 on Christmas Eve 2001. The Foundation is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to assisting indigent cancer patients of all ages in the Rio Grande Valley. Its primary focus is to offer financial aid for cancer patients’ travel and lodging expenses when seeking treatment outside the Rio Grande Valley. This crucial support helps bridge the gap for patients who may not have the necessary resources to access treatment away from their local area.

The Foundation’s primary goal is to raise the level of hope for its recipients and the community as a whole by providing vital financial assistance. Furthermore, the Foundation is committed to breaking the isolation experienced by indigent cancer patients and fostering improved communication across community lines. Ultimately, the mission of the Foundation can be summarized in a simple yet powerful statement: “No distance is too far to extend a helping hand to those who feel helpless.”

The 10th annual Golf Tournament will not only be a fantastic opportunity for golf enthusiasts to come together and show their support for this important cause, but it will also serve as a means to raise awareness and funds to further the Foundation’s mission. All are encouraged to participate and contribute to the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support indigent cancer patients in their time of need.
The “Light of Hope” Tournament is scheduled to take place at the Tierra Santa Golf Club in Weslaco on September 14, 2024. Early registration is recommended, and breakfast and lunch will be provided.
