As the calendar turns towards February, the 2024-25 High School Basketball Season continues to roll. As many Districts are at the halfway mark of Play, we start to see who the potential contenders are heading into the Playoffs. One of those teams, The La Feria Lions, have left their mark in the regular season.
After a successful non-district portion, the Lions were ready to begin 32-4A on a high note. So how did the first half fare for La Feria.
To open District action, The Lions first took on the rival Hidalgo Pirates and shut them down to win 51-35. In their second district game against Brownsville Jubilee, the Lions were hot on both sides of the ball, controlling the game and taking the win 56-41.
In their third district game, the Lions took on the Valley View Tigers. Both teams have had some good matchups over the last few seasons in non-district. However this season, things were a bit different. The Tigers in their first season in 32-4A after spending years in 31-5A. In a back and forth shootout that had a lot of offensive and defensive success for both teams, the Lions took control late in the game and captured the win 44-41.
In their last two games of round one, dominance continued to be the trend for the Lions. La Feria took on Port Isabel and found themselves behind early on. However, the Lions’ offense ignited in the second quarter by outscoring the Tarpons 22 to 6. That quarter was enough to fuel the Lions past Port Isabel 60-49.
To finish up the first half of District, the Lions took on the Grulla Gators. A strong offense and defense was enough to propel the Lions to a 53-34 win over the Gators.
At 5-0, La Feria will begin the second half against Hidalgo followed by Brownsville Jubilee. The Lions will attempt to continue their winning ways as they look to contend for a 32-4A District Title.
