Fun with Etiquette – Tipping Etiquette

etiquetteheader

Dear Ms. Etiquette,
This past week I rented a boat slip on the island thinking I was going to use it during the week (spring break), but I got too busy and never used it. I felt bad knowing I had kept someone from using the slip on such a busy week. When I went to pay for the rental, the manager said I didn’t need to since I didn’t use it. I didn’t think this was right, so I offered him a nice tip. Was this correct?

You did the most gracious thing a person in your situation could do by offering the person in charge a handsome tip. Most people do not consider any other person’s concerns. Their thoughts are, “great, I sure saved some money” instead of feeling uneasy as you did. However, in offering him something, he will surely remember you and will be willing to rent to you in the future. Most people do not realize the value of tipping. It goes way beyond the service provided at the time, it insures good service for the next time as well.
This holds true in any situation whether in a restaurant, a taxi cab, valet parking or any service oriented job. Tipping pays off.
